sunnyside neighborhood design
an affordable neighborhood for eastern washington farmers
Catholic Charities Housing Services hosted a design competition for Washington firms to envision a neighborhood design for their recently purchased 75-acre lot in Sunnyside, a majority-Latino and largely agricultural community. Framework and the project team were selected to complete the project, which centered on an in-depth public engagement process. Through design exercises and conversation, the community voiced the need for affordable and well-integrated rental and owner-occupied units, an easily accessible community center, and a safe neighborhood where they can be in community with each other.
The resulting design accommodates 200 affordable homes set along walkable streets and centered around a community center and green space. A kit of parts offers floor plans for 2-bed, 3-bed, 4-bed, and apartment buildings, which are laid out onto 3 street types that prioritize multi-modal transit and greenery. The resulting design offers the client a well-thought out yet flexible strategy for providing high quality housing in a well-connected neighborhood.
